How to choose and fit a knee sleeve

A knitted knee sleeve is the simplest knee support to live with: pull it on, train, take it off. Getting the size right is what makes it feel supportive rather than either loose or tight. This guide covers measuring, putting it on and looking after it.

Before you start

  • What you need: A tape measure. Measure around the thigh 10 cm above the centre of the kneecap while standing with the leg straight.
  • Clean, dry skin — no lotion or sweat, so the grip band and straps hold.
  • Have the product page's size ranges to hand if you're choosing a size.

Steps

  1. Measure 10 cm above the kneecap

Stand with the leg straight and measure around the thigh 10 cm above the centre of the kneecap. S 33–38 cm, M 38–43 cm, L 43–48 cm, XL 48–53 cm. If you're between sizes, choose the smaller one for a snugger feel.

  2. Turn the top third inside out

Fold the top of the sleeve down so the silicone band is on the outside. This makes it easier to pull over the calf.

    Fit: none
  3. Pull on from the foot

Sit down, point the toes and pull the sleeve up over the calf until the kneecap sits in the middle of the sleeve.

    Fit: none
  4. Unfold and smooth

Unfold the top so the silicone band sits flat against the thigh. Smooth out any creases behind the knee.

    Fit: snug, no folds
  5. Bend and check

Bend the knee a few times. The sleeve should stay put without rolling down or cutting in behind the knee. If it does either, try the next size.

    Check

How long to wear it and how to wash it

Wear it for activity and take it off for long rests; don't sleep in it. Hand wash at 30 °C with straps fastened, rinse well and air dry away from heat. No bleach, no tumble dryer.

Good to know

Supports are for comfort and a feeling of support during activity. If you have an injury or a health concern, speak to a GP or physiotherapist before using one.

Questions about the knee sleeve

How long can I wear it?

Wear it for activity, and take it off when you're resting for long periods or sleeping. If the skin under the sleeve becomes red or itchy, take it off.

Can I wear it under jeans or work trousers?

Yes. The knit is thin enough to wear under most trousers. Wear it over bare skin for the silicone band to grip.

It rolls down at the top. What's wrong?

It's usually a size too big, or it's been pulled on over lotion or sweaty skin. Try wearing it over clean, dry skin; if it still rolls, go down a size.
