How to fit an open-patella knee sleeve
The open-patella sleeve is made from 4 mm foam rather than knit, so it feels firmer and holds its shape. People often choose it for the gym, court sports and hiking. The kneecap opening needs to sit in the right place, which this guide walks through.
Before you start
- What you need: A tape measure. Measure around the thigh 10 cm above the centre of the kneecap.
- Clean, dry skin — no lotion or sweat, so the grip band and straps hold.
- Have the product page's size ranges to hand if you're choosing a size.

Steps
Measure and choose
Measure 10 cm above the kneecap: S 33–38 cm, M 38–43 cm, L 43–48 cm, XL 48–53 cm. Foam sleeves stretch less than knit, so if you're between sizes choose the larger one.
SizingRoll the top down
Fold the top third of the sleeve down to make it easier to pull over the calf.
Fit: nonePull up and centre the opening
Sit with the leg slightly bent and pull the sleeve up until the kneecap sits inside the opening, with the padded edge all the way round it.
Fit: noneUnroll and smooth the seams
Unroll the top and run your hands down the side seams so they lie flat along the sides of the knee.
Fit: snug, no foldsMove and check
Squat gently a few times. The opening should stay centred and the sleeve shouldn't pinch behind the knee. Adjust or resize if it does.
Check
How long to wear it and how to wash it
Wear it for activity and take it off for long rests; don't sleep in it. Hand wash at 30 °C with straps fastened, rinse well and air dry away from heat. No bleach, no tumble dryer.
Good to know
Supports are for comfort and a feeling of support during activity. If you have an injury or a health concern, speak to a GP or physiotherapist before using one.
Questions about the open-patella sleeve
Does the foam get hot?
It's warmer than a knitted sleeve. The brushed lining wicks sweat, but it's best for sessions rather than all-day wear.
Which is better for me, knit or foam?
Knit is lighter and better for long wear and running. Foam feels firmer and is popular for gym work and court sports. Many people own one of each.
How do I wash it?
Hand wash at 30 °C with a little detergent, rinse well and air dry away from direct heat. Don't tumble dry.
